The Reality of Online Trading Fraud
Online marketplaces and classifieds platforms open up enormous opportunities for buyers and sellers alike — but they also attract bad actors. Understanding how common scams work is your best defense. Most fraud follows predictable patterns, and once you know them, they're surprisingly easy to spot.
The Most Common Marketplace Scams
1. The Too-Good-To-Be-True Price
If a listing price is dramatically lower than every other comparable listing, treat it with extreme suspicion. Scammers use artificially low prices to generate quick interest and rush buyers into acting before thinking critically.
2. The Overpayment / Fake Cheque Scam
A "buyer" sends you a cheque or payment for more than the asking price, then asks you to refund the difference. The original payment eventually bounces, and you're out both the item and the refund. Never accept overpayments.
3. The Shipping Scam
A buyer or seller insists on using a specific, unfamiliar shipping or escrow service. These fake services are controlled by the scammer. Money or goods sent through them are gone forever. Always use well-known, verified payment and shipping methods.
4. Phishing Links in Messages
Scammers send messages saying something like "I can't call, please check my offer here [link]." These links lead to fake marketplace login pages designed to steal your credentials. Never click unsolicited links from strangers.
5. The Empty Box / Wrong Item
A seller ships an empty box or an item completely different from what was listed. This is why using platforms with buyer protection is crucial — you have recourse if you pay through the platform rather than off-platform.
Red Flags to Watch For
- 🚩 Seller or buyer wants to move communication off the platform immediately
- 🚩 Requests for bank transfer, wire, or gift card payments
- 🚩 Price is unrealistically low with no explanation
- 🚩 Seller has no reviews, history, or profile photo
- 🚩 Vague, copy-pasted responses that don't address your specific questions
- 🚩 Urgency tactics: "I have 5 other buyers, decide now"
- 🚩 Insistence on a specific payment or shipping method
How to Protect Yourself
- Use platform payments: Marketplace-integrated payments usually include buyer and seller protection.
- Meet locally for high-value items: A public place during daylight hours. Consider bringing someone with you.
- Verify before you pay: Inspect items in person or via video call before completing payment.
- Trust your instincts: If something feels off, walk away. There will be other deals.
- Report suspicious listings: Most platforms allow you to flag fraud. Doing so protects other users too.
What to Do If You've Been Scammed
Act quickly. Contact the platform's support team, dispute the transaction through your payment provider, and file a report with your local consumer protection authority or cybercrime unit. Keep all records of communications and receipts.
Staying informed is your strongest shield. Scammers rely on confusion and urgency — slow down, do your checks, and you'll stay protected.
