The Listing Is Your Storefront
On any online marketplace — whether it's a global platform or a local classifieds site — your listing is the first (and often only) impression you make on a buyer. A well-crafted listing can mean the difference between a quick sale at your asking price and an item that sits unsold for weeks.
Start With a Strong Title
Your title needs to be clear, specific, and searchable. Buyers use search terms, so your title should include:
- Brand name and model
- Key specification or size
- Condition (if it strengthens the listing)
- A key benefit or feature
Weak title: "Laptop for sale"
Strong title: "Dell XPS 15 (2023) — 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD — Excellent Condition"
Nail the Description
A good description answers every question a buyer might have before they even need to ask:
- Open with the key details: Model, age, specs, and condition up front.
- Be honest about flaws: Mention any scratches, dents, or issues. Buyers appreciate honesty and it builds trust.
- List what's included: Original box? Charger? Extra accessories? Say so.
- Give context: "Bought in 2023, used lightly for work" tells a story and reassures buyers.
- Explain why you're selling: "Upgrading to a newer model" is a common and credible reason.
Take Great Photos
Photos are the single most important factor in online listings. Follow these simple rules:
- Use natural light or a well-lit room — avoid dark or blurry shots.
- Shoot from multiple angles: front, back, sides, and close-ups of any wear.
- Include a photo of all accessories included.
- Use a clean, neutral background — a plain surface works well.
- Don't use stock photos; buyers want to see the actual item.
Price It Right
Overpricing is the #1 reason items don't sell. Before setting a price:
- Search for the same item (sold listings, if available) on your platform.
- Factor in condition — a "good" item should be priced 15–25% below "excellent."
- Leave a small negotiation buffer if you're open to offers.
- Consider the total cost to the buyer (shipping, fees).
Respond Promptly
Buyers often contact multiple sellers simultaneously. A fast, friendly response dramatically increases your chances of closing the sale. Enable notifications on your marketplace app and aim to reply within a few hours.
